COMMUNITY EDUCATION
Diogenes staff members regularly speak and make presentations in the community to promote healthy lifestyles and choices to teens. Common venues are schools, clubs, and youth-oriented organizations.
WORKSHOPS
We conduct regular free workshops on anger management, conflict resolution, refusal skills, drug and alcohol abuse, teen-parent conflicts, and STD/HIV. These programs also provide information for youth and their parents about the risks involved with running away from home an alternatives.
STREET-BASED OUTREACH
2-4 times each week our street outreach team and “Med-Ed” mobile full-service health clinic and classroom visit an area in the county where homeless youth congregate. Sites are rotated and staff target male and female youth at-risk with roaming teams handing out material and medical staff providing free services at the unit. This mobile component of our program is critical in overcoming transportation barriers and providing services "on the streets" throughout Sacramento County.
In the mobile clinic the primary focus is on preventing STD/HIV and unplanned pregnancies through risk-reduction education. A full range of primary medical care is provided including health screening, testing, first aid, family planning, and both over-the-counter and prescription medications. Medical staffing is provided under contract with licensed Nurse Practitioners from Women's Health Specialists.
At the mobile clinic Diogenes' street outreach staff provides on-site education, counseling, referrals to service, and distributes risk-reduction supplies. Teams also go out on foot to hand out literature and build relationships with teens in the area. This personal contact is often what builds the trust that enables teens to reach out for help.
